Core Value Perseverance in Kickboxing
Pia Lauder

Several years ago, Vista created a set of nine Core Values that describe what is important to us as we work to impact the lives of individuals with disabilities and the broader community. For 2022, we have chosen to focus our blog series on these Core Values - telling the story of our students and members and our organization through this important and powerful lens.

October Core Value Highlight: PERSEVERANCE

At recent Kickboxing Club classes for students and members, they learned how to persevere by throwing a punch. The wellness class provides not only a great workout, but also teaches Club members how to deal with life's challenges.

Surviving life's curveballs requires tenacity, Kickboxing instructor Ronnie Hellemann, CEO of Believer in Abilities, LLC and Vista community partner, witnesses students and members putting this skill into action during their classes. "It was fantastic to see the students and members truly giving their best and their willingness to learn the varied moves and footwork," Ronnie says. She goes on to relate one student's experience: "Adair was initially nervous and did not want to participate. But after some encouragement from Adair's peers, she changed her mind and showed perseverance by having the courage to try something new." Ronnie continues, "What do you know...Adair loved the classes, and kickboxing is now her new favorite hobby."

The Vista Core Value of Perseverance inspires students to be resilient and courageous. Adair explains that thinking about her favorite martial arts show, Kiddie Kai, inspired her to step outside of her comfort zone. Adair and her instructors then printed pictures from the show and used them in class to make the space inviting and an inspiration source, as well as to eliminate thoughts like, "I can't do this," but rather, "I can try." When we asked Adair what her favorite part about Kickboxing Club is, she said, “I really enjoyed the class and that I did not let my fear not knowing stop me from discovering a new hobby."

One of the lessons we can all take from the Kickboxing Club members is that you can change your perspective...with the will to try and even with the help of a supportive environment. We hope you enjoyed learning about the various methods our students and members use to persevere. We will highlight our Core Value Excellence next month.

More to come!
