Matt Fitzgerald, a Vista member based in Westbrook, CT, breaks the mold of what people expect from someone with a disability. As a DJ with over 18 years of experience, Matt is passionate about using his craft to build meaningful experiences for his listeners. With over 295,000 at his disposal, Matt has a playlist for every occasion.
When Matt was twelve, he stumbled into the world of DJing inadvertently. His father, a musician from a 70s rock band, brought Matt to one of his shows. The venue was supposed to have a hired DJ as well, but they cancelled at the last minute. Instead of doing nothing, Matt stepped in to help with only but his dad's speakers, an amp, an IPod and some Sony Diskmans. It was the first time Matt had ever tried to be a disk jockey.
After his first experience, Matt was hooked. He continued doing gigs and performed at his first wedding at 16 years old. Matt plays at dances and many other functions. His specialty is school parties. You may have seen Matt performing at this year's Vista Parading Paws Dog Show or the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Walk.
For Matt, music connects and tells stories. When listening to music, Matt says, "We can feel everything the artist has put into one song, one recording. It's amazing - if we can open our ears." Although a song is "just a song," Matt believes that most people find far more when they listen.
By extension, Matt enjoys being a DJ because it allows him to use his passion to create lasting memories for others. Matt explains it simply: "I like to entertain and make the night special for people. It's really fun for me."
Coming up, Matt is looking forward to working at the Breakfast with Santa event at the Sara Noble Intermediate School in New Milford, CT.
Matt's main business goal is to increase his average number of monthly gigs.
