Vista's Bike Club Is Gearing Up For Tour de Shore

Next month, Vista Students, Members, Staff, family members, and community members will be embarking on the 2024 Vista Tour de Shore. This important fundraising event takes riders of all abilities on a scenic tour around the Connecticut shoreline, with 5, 25, 40, and 60 mile courses available to choose from. Many riders are already preparing for the event, putting together teams, gathering support, and training for the ride. One such group is Vista’s very own Bike Club, whose members we spoke to about the upcoming ride.

Every Tuesday, the Vista Bike Club meets at the Westbrook campus for a group ride. The Club’s Advisor, Vista staff member Roger Krasusky, helps the club members set up their bikes and get ready for the ride. "The Bike Club is about more than exercise, we learn the rules of the road and how to ride as a group,” Roger told us. “Another focus is training for the 5-mile Tour de Shore ride."

When asked about what they like best about Vista Bike Club, the students and members replied:

"I like riding my bike."

"I like being able to ride to the beach."

"I just like pedaling."

"I like riding with my friends."

Starting from the Westbrook Elk’s Lodge, the Vista Tour de Shore routes wind their way through the shoreline, forests, and towns of Southern Connecticut. Since the route is all on public roads, safe riding practices are critical for the well-being of our riders. Using the Vista Bike Cub as an introduction to road cycling, we can help our students and members learn a useful life skill. For individuals who do not have access to a car, cycling can triple the range of work, shopping, and recreational opportunities that they have access to.
