Creative Writing and the Core Value: Excellence

Creative Writing and the Core Value: Excellence

Several years ago, Vista created a set of nine Core Values that describe what is important to us as we work to impact the lives of individuals with disabilities and the broader community. For 2022, we have chosen to focus our blog series on these Core Values - telling the story of our students and members and our organization through this important and powerful lens.

November/December Core Value Highlight: EXCELLENCE

For the next two months, we will be highlighting the Core Value of Excellence! Discover students demonstrate this core value in Vista's Creative Writing classes by expressing themselves and striving to attain high standards in their particular writing goals.

The classes are designed to help students develop a sense of self-esteem and accomplishment through writing exercises that extend and challenge them. Students will sometimes work on a project separately or collectively.

The class Instructor Jocelyn Ruggiero said of the recent assignment, which was an essay about self-reflection: "This was a very special Creative Writing class. Each student made a conscious effort to say “yes” to whatever assignment I gave them. Because they were willing to take risks and stretch their comfort zones, they each wrote a rich body of work that truly embodies the essence of excellence.”

Each student embraced the weekly writing assignments. Discover student Lexi shares: "The classes provided me with the opportunity to grow in my writing skills and to continue to strive and improve that skill each and every day!"

We hope you enjoyed learning about the ways our Vista students strive for excellence especially in creative writing.

More to come!
