We hope you enjoy learning more about these special young men and wen!

George Barnett, Class of 2021

For our first 2022 Vista graduate interview, we’re pleased to introduce George Barnett. George grew up in Brookfield, Conn. and started the Discover Program in Fall 2019. He has moved to an apartment in Settlers Place and is living independently in the greater shoreline community. George spoke with us about his Vista journey to graduation.

What are some of the goals you worked towards during your time in the Discover Program?

I worked on maintaining my health and watching what I eat. I also learned to manage my medication by using a med minder. It was important for me to learn how to access the community by using public transportation so I could attend things like Café Evolve.

What achievements are you the proudest of?

I’ve learned how to do my own laundry. I’m working at Big Y Supermarket. I’ve also become more aware of my finances and use a mobile banking app to control my spending and save money from my paycheck. I’m also keeping an eye on my caffeine intake, sticking to two cups a day.

Can you share an example of a time you feel you displayed Leadership?

I recently had a chance to help someone out. A woman in the parking lot at work had accidentally locked her baby in her car. Her keys and phone were also in the car. I called 911 and stayed with her until the police arrived.

George is active with his hometown fire department

What are your hobbies and interests?

I’m a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. I’ve also been involved with the Fire Department in my hometown of Brookfield. I like to stay in the loop of what's happening in my community by listening to the local police and fire scanner. I try to find time to work out.

What do you think you are best known for?

Needing my iced coffee first thing in the morning!

What’s your favorite color? Favorite food?

Color: brown, like iced coffee. Food: I’ll eat anything!

We hope you enjoyed getting to know George. Next week, we’ll introduce you to another graduate from the Vista Class of 2022!
