For our upcoming blog series, we are thrilled to introduce you to some Vista students who have reached a significant milestone this year...our Vista 2021 graduating class!
We hope you enjoy!
For our next 2021 Vista graduate, we would like to introduce you to Daniel Herskowitz. Daniel is from Essex, CT and joined Vista in 2017. He currently lives in the Discover transition condominiums to prepare for living independently in the greater shoreline community. Daniel spoke with us about his Vista journey thus far.
Daniel Herskowitz, Class of 2021
What are you known for at Vista?
I am known for always participating in activities at Vista like the recreation activities and the Vista Trips. We’ve gone to different places like the Catskills in New York. I’m social and friendly, so I like going out to dinner or just chatting with my friends.
Daniel enjoys being a part of the annual Student and Member Vista Trips to new places like the Catskills in New York (pictured above)
What are some of the goals you worked towards while in Vista’s Discover Program and what are you still working on?
Moving into the transition condominiums was a huge accomplishment for me. It is helping me prepare for when I graduate and find my own home out in the community. Because I have my own kitchen, I get to practice cooking. I’m a good cook! I even have a chef’s hat which I like to I wear in the kitchen sometimes. I am able to use the stove independently now. Some things I like to cook are pot roast, spaghetti and meatballs, and mac and cheese.
I am working on my budget; I practice saving up my money before making extra purchases.
One goal that I have is to keep volunteering. I like giving back to my community.
What are some of your proudest achievements while at Vista?
I am proud that I have learned to use public transportation independently, especially since I love trains. I am saving up for train money to go to Stamford to explore the city.
One big goal I have had at Vista was getting a paid job. I recently started working at Walmart! I remember when I started practicing my vocational skills before I came to Vista in high school; I have worked at different job training sites since then and learned a lot about how to focus at work and be a good employee.
What are you looking forward to after graduation?
I am looking forward to moving into my own home! I want to keep hanging out with my friends, working, volunteering, and exploring the community by taking public transportation.
I enjoy going to the YMCA, something I stopped doing during COVID. I am excited that I have been able to go back there now and plan to keep going after I graduate. It’s a great way to stay active.
Daniel is an enthusiastic chef who has developed his cooking skills while at Vista
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
I have a lot of interests. I like trains and rail roads as well as cooking. I really value spending time with my friends; we laugh and just hang out together. One of my friends and I get together for dinner on a regular basis, so that's something I always look forward to during the week.
I also like being a part of the Special Olympics. I’ve participated in a lot of the different sports they have, including basketball, baseball, softball, swimming, tennis and soccer. Some of these sports are things I get to practice during the year through Vista’s recreation activities.
Bonus question: What is your favorite food?
I have several: meatloaf, pepperoni pizza and spaghetti and meatballs, which are all things I am able to cook myself!
We hope you enjoyed learning about Daniel and hope that you will join us at Vista’s 2021 Graduation Ceremony on Friday, August 20 at 1:00 PM at The Kate in Old Saybrook, CT!
